OPV Jean Tranape Reaches Nouméa, Joining Sister Ship Auguste Bénébig

The Overseas Patrol Vessel Jean Tranape arrived in Nouméa on 18 June 2026. She is the fourth of six OPVs designed by MAURIC and built by Socarenam for the French Navy, and the second of the class to be stationed in New Caledonia, alongside Auguste Bénébig, the lead ship of the series, in service there since 2023.
The vessel's arrival fell symbolically on the anniversary of General de Gaulle's 1940 appeal, and she was welcomed by local authorities and every available unit from the Nouméa naval base, including Auguste Bénébig, the support vessel D'Entrecasteaux, the EDA-S landing craft designed by MAURIC : Sabre and a maritime patrol aircraft.
Measuring 79.9 m in length and 11.8 m in breadth, with a full load displacement of 1,300 tonnes, the OPVs reach speeds of 24 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Each vessel carries a crew of 30, with capacity for 24 additional personnel.
With Jean Tranape now on station, France's naval presence in New Caledonia has been almost entirely renewed in recent years. The programme continues with a fifth OPV, Philippe Bernardino, due to reach French Polynesia in 2027, and a sixth, Félix Éboué, expected in the Indian Ocean by late 2027.
